The twenty-first Summerslam event took place in Indianapolis. The event saw, a half a year feud between Edge and Undertaker end in a Hell In A Cell match. Ironically this event saw the first PPV rated as TV-PG since 1998. On the card, World Champion CM Punk defended the title against JBL. Triple H defended his WWE title against The Great Khali.

Originally, Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels were scheduled to finish their feud at Summerslam 2008. With the feud red hot, and the fact Undertaker and Edge’s feud was going to end at the same night; those plans changed. Instead, Shawn Michaels held an angle to announce his retirement. During the segment, Chris was due to hit his wife. Instead, of a protected punch, Jericho legitimately punch Michaels wife in the head. Their feud continued onto No Mercy 2009.

Given so many parallesl in their careers, John Cena and Batista finally faced off in a one on one match at Summerslam 2008 for the first ever time. Both men debuted in 2002; won their first World title at WrestleMania 21.
