SummerSlam 2003

| Date: August 24, 2003 | CityPhoenix, AZ | Venue Southwest Airlines Arena | Attendance 16,113 |

SummerSlam 2003 was a joint brand PPV with stars from Raw and Smackdown competing. The two main events saw Kurt Angle challenge Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. Whilst Triple H defended his World Championship against Goldberg, Chris Jericho, RVD, Randy Orton and Kevin Nash inside an Elimination Chamber.

Original plans for the World Championship was to have a singles match between Triple H and Goldberg. Due to Triple H sustaining an groin injury, this match was changed to protect Triple H. An Elimination Chamber match was held, with The Game coming in last.

An interesting fact, is that Randy Orton, who debuted a year earlier, made his PPV debut at SummerSlam 2003. In actual fact Randy Orton joins a very small unique list who wrestlers to have a World title match in their PPV debut.

In a very much first and last moment, during the WWE Championship match Kurt Angle forced Brock Lesnar into submission. This was Brock Lesnar’s first tap out in his 16 months in WWE. To date, this is Brock Lesnar’s only submission loss (other than the dodgy SummerSlam 2015 finish against the Undertaker).
