SummerSlam 2001 was the fourteenth annual SummerSlam WWE. It took place on August 19, 2001 at the Compaq Center in San Jose, California. The show was the second WWE vs WCW/ECW shows, the first being Invasion. The main event saw the return of The Rock, who challenged WCW Champion Booker T. Stone Cold Steve Austin defended his WWE Title against WWE hero Kurt Angle, a match that would end up in disqualification.

At the event, the WWE Light Heavyweight Championship officially retired, as it was merged with the WCW Cruiserweight Championship.
