King of the Ring 2001

| Date June 24, 2001 | City East Rutherford, NJ | Venue Continental Airlines Arena | Attendance 17,777 |

The 2001 King Of The Ring was the 9th annual PPV of the tournament. Only the semi-finals were aired live on the event, with the previous rounds taking place on Raw & Smackdown. Interestingly, the four semi finalists were all storyline friends. Kurt Angle was keen to become the first King Of The Ring winner to retain his crown.

Also on the show, speculation of WCW’s reformation were rife. Two former WCW’ stars Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit were set to face WWE Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin. Rumours fueled Austin’s speculation that if either man won, they would defect to WCW. During the triple threat match, Chris Benoit hit a super-plex from the top rope, that legitmately broke Benoit’s neck. WCW Champion Booker T attacked Stone Cold Steve Austin part way through the match.
