Following the contrevorsial ending to the 1997 Royal Rumble match, where winner Stone Cold Steve Austin escaped elimination only to win the match. At In Your House 13, a number one contenders Fatal Four Way match was set up. However that all changed, when WWE Champion Shawn Michaels held up the championship, making this match a WWE Championship match. The match was won by Bret Hart, who lost the title to Sid the following night on Raw.

  1. The Godwinns: Henry O. and Phineas I. defeated The Headbangers: Mosh and Thrasher
  2. Marc Mero (accompanied by Sable) defeated Leif Cassidy
  3. The Nation of Domination: Faarooq, Crush and Savio Vega (accompanied by Clarence Mason) defeated Bart Gunn, Goldust and Flash Funk
  4. Rocky Maivia (c) defeated Hunter Hearst Helmsley to retain the WWE Championship
  5. Doug Furnas and Phil Lafon defeated Owen Hart and The British Bulldog (c) (accompanied by Clarence Mason) via DQ in a match for the WWE Tag Team Championship
    • As a result of the DQ finish, Owen Hart and The British Bulldog remained the WWE Tag Team Champions
  6. Bret Hart defeated Steve Austin, Vader (accompanied by Paul Bearer) and The Undertaker to capture the vacant WWE Championship in a Four Corners Elimination match
