The second annual Extreme Rules event moved from the traditional One Night Stand June slot to the post WrestleMania PPV event. Replacing the Backlash event after 11 years.

The main event saw a rematch from WrestleMania between John Cena and Batista in a Last Man Standing match. John retained his WWE title using a clever trick of duct taping Batista’s legs to the turnbuckle. A rfurther rematch would take place at Over The Limit, which would see Batista leave WWE the following night on Raw.

New World Champion Jack Swagger defended his championship against Randy Orton. Whilst Chris Jericho and Edge, who feuded over the title leading to WrestleMania settled the score in a cage match.

In other Wrestlemania rematches, Sheamus beat The Game. Post match the Celtic Warrior took out the Game for nearly 11 months. CM Punk and Rey Mysterio faced off, with CM Punks hair on the line. Punk won the match. The following event saw Punk’s Hair and Rey Mysterio joining the Straight Edge Society on the line.

As a result of winning the Tag Gauntlet match, The Hart Dynasty become number one contenders for the WWE Tag Team titles.
