With WWE turning to TV-PG, the annual One Night Stand event turned into Extreme Rules. The theme for the event was that all matches held a stipulation of some kind. The 2009 event saw a mixture, of Triple Threat, Fatal Fourway, No Holds Barred, Submission, Cage and Ladder matches.

The main event saw Jeff Hardy challenge Edge in a ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Jeff successfully secured the title, however CM Punk cashed in his Money In The Bank briefcase on Jeff Hardy as a result.

During the WWE title cage match, Batista legitimately tore his Biceps brachii muscle mid match. Quickly ending the match. Despite the injjury, Batista won the WWE Championship from Randy Orton. The following night, Legacy would attack Batista, forcing him to surrender the WWE title. Randy Orton won the vacant title the following night on Raw.

Tommy Dreamer made history, becoming the only person to win the ECW World Title in both it’s original form and the WWE version of ECW.
