The twelfth edition of the Backlash event will be aired on 11/09/2016 from the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia. This marks the first time an event has being held under the Backlash chronology since 2009, and will be exclusive to the SmackDown Brand. The event will be aired live across various pay-per-view channels across the globe including a live stream on the WWE Network.

On August 23 2016 edition of SmackDown, a problem became apparent between AJ Styles and Dolph Ziggler. This was resolved by SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon. He then made a number one contenders match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. AJ Styles was ultimately successful in securing his place to go to Backlash for a championship match against Dean Ambrose.

The WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship was officially announced at SummerSlam, with the championships being unveiled on the August 23 2016 edition of SmackDown. A tag team championship tournament was officially announced, with two Quarterfinal matches taking place on that edition of SmackDown. The finals, to determine the inaugural SmackDown Tag Team Champions will take place at Backlash.

The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship was officially unveiled on the August 23 2016 edition of SmackDown, with commissioner Shane McMahon announcing that the inaugural champion will be decided at Backlash in a Six-Pack Champion. In the aftermath of SummerSlam, a heated rivalry has being established between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler which will see them clash for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, one on one. Staggering from the beating he suffered from Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, an spooky challenge was issued by Bray Wyatt to Randy Orton. These two will clash, one-on-one at Backlash live on the WWE Network.
