OSR: WWE Backlash 2007 Review

In the next edition of the OSR, we go back to April 2007 when after nearly four years brand only PPV events were brought to an end. The event that marked this was Backlash 2007, which bought the stars of RAW, SmackDown and ECW under one roof in the aftermath of WrestleMania 23. The headline matches for the card where championship heavy, with each of the brands out to make their own mark in a different style of match. The under card for this event is nonetheless a little bit of a mystery, so this could be an interesting journey here in the OSR. But here is the WWE Backlash 2007 Review…

The show opens with a promo reminiscing over the events of WrestleMania 23, but focusing on how that was just the beginning. Each of the main event feuds for this evening are given prominence to establish themselves. We then go inside the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia for this evenings event with our individual commentary teams; JR and The King for RAW; Joey Styles and Tazz for ECW; Michael Cole and JBL for SmackDown before we quickly head up to the ring for the first match of the evening.

1. [RAW] World Tag Team Championship: The Hardy Boyz (c) (Matt and Jeff Hardy) vs. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch

The Hardy’s make their way out to the ring first, receiving a cracking reaction. Cade and Murdoch…not so much. The match begins very methodically between Cade and Matt. After several minutes of back and forth action between the duos, Cade and Murdoch are able to gain the upper hand after sending Jeff crashing to the floor. They are able to maintain the control of Jeff for the next few minutes, until Jeff is able to make the hot tag to Matt allowing a shift in the matches momentum. The Hardy’s are able to pick up the victory following a Swanton Bomb to Murdoch in a respectable opening match, but easily forgettable.

Winners: The Hardy Boyz, to retain the World Tag Team Championship

Match Rating: 2.5 out of 5.0 Stars

2. [RAW] WWE Women’s Championship: Melina (c) vs. Mickie James

Both women make their way to the ring, with Mickie receiving quite a good reaction. The match gets started as a ground wrestling match, with Melina being able to gain the advantage following a “problem” with her eyelashes. She is able to show some great wrestling holds in the next few minutes, with some incredible leg strength. Mickie is able to regain some momentum following some aerial moves which heightens the pace of the match. Ultimately though, Melina is able to pick up the win following a reverse DDT (aka a Scorpion Death Drop) to retain the championship. Very refreshing to see a decent women’s match from this time. Both women are very credible competitors, and had a good chance to shine here.

Winner: Melina, to retain the WWE Women’s Championship

Match Rating: 2.5 out of 5.0 Stars
