Eric Bischoff speaks on SummerSlam; Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar!

He was one of the most controversial and prominent figures throughout the Monday Night Wars. He went head-to-head with Vince McMahon and the WWE. He provided us with some of the most notable moments throughout the 1990s. And then he emerged on RAW in 2002 as the General Manager. Out of the limelight for numerous years, he provides insight at various points. In the recent edition of Bischoff on Wrestling alongside WWE Alumni Hulk Hogan, the former President of WCW has shared his thoughts on SummerSlam 2016. But far more importantly, his opinion and interpretation of the main event; Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar. Here is the highlights of what he had to say…

  • When asked whether he would have done the same finish for Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar, he responded…

“I might have. It’s hard to say. I never like to answer a hypothetical like that. You have to know all of the situation and be aware of all of the variables. I clearly don’t. I don’t know if I would have done it or not. I kind of liked it in a couple of different respects. It was unpredictable. Anyone who listens to me on this podcast or has read my book or watched my DVD knows that I am a big fan of doing what’s not predictable. What feels spontaneous? By virtue of the fact it’s surprising, it will get people’s attention. I liked the uniqueness of the finish. What I didn’t really think made any sense is to send people home with a bad taste in their mouth. A finish like that, inevitably, is going to leave people confused.”

“I don’t necessarily mean in a bad way, but they aren’t going to know how to feel because it’s so different. It will take awhile for that to set in and to resonate with some people. It’s not a predictable finish, so people that wanted to cheer Randy Orton didn’t get a chance to really. The people that really dig Brock Lesnar may not have liked the way that finish played out. Maybe some of them did. The end result was it left people kind of stunned. When you leave people stunned or surprised, like that, at the end of a PPV, they tend to go home unhappy.”

  • When asked whether something else should have closed SummerSlam, he responded…

“If it would have been me, and I had perfect 20/20 hindsight, and I was sitting in my armchair, quarterback chair – which is pure luxury – I think if they would have put AJ Styles vs John Cena last; people would have appreciated the Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar finish more…if that makes sense.”

Now, from an editorial perspective what Bischoff says makes sense. The match between AJ Styles and John Cena was absolutely incredible with high drama and tension throughout. But ultimately, through the success these individuals achieved in this match, it made everything else thereafter seem timid and underwhelming. It was one of those matches which was impossible to follow. And whilst the finish between Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar may have left people in shock, in some ways it actually felt like an anti-climax. It was like a big balloon having all the air sucked out of it. When, in reality something else should have happened to make that balloon even bigger. Whatever you think of him, Bischoff certainly has a valid point.

What do you think of Eric Bischoff’s opinion of Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar? Is he right or wrong? We’d love to know what you think!
