On This Day: WWE Release Kurt Angle

On this day, August 25th 2006 the wrestling world sat in shock when the news emerged that WWE had released Kurt Angle from his contract. At the time, exceptionally little was known about the reasons behind it all. Both the WWE and Kurt Angle were keeping quiet, with the statement from WWE outlining;

“Due to personal issues, Kurt Angle has been granted an early release from his contract. WWE looks forward to establishing a new relationship with Kurt in the near future” – WWE.com

It was later revealed in an interview with WWE.com, at the time Kurt was exceptionally beaten up physically and mentally, He’d recently returned from suspension which was compounded by a groin injury. Kurt at the time revealed that he planned to take some much needed time away from the ring to allow his injuries to heal but didn’t rule out a return to the WWE in the future, outlining;

“Vince says when I’m ready, if I’m ever ready, to come back just sign on the dotted line. I’ll tell you if I do return I’m going back to my roots, training on the mat like my amateur days. Longevity is the key.” – @RealKurtAngle, WWE.com

Ultimately, Kurt has yet to return to the WWE. Shortly following on from his release, he soon re-emerged in their main rival TNA and remained with the company until 2016 when he departed the company to go on a long hiatus. It has often being said that Kurt Angle is one of those competitors that could have a great match with a broomstick…from recollection, there is only one bad match which comes to mind…not naming any names.

With it being 10 years since he made his departure from the company, is the time now right for Kurt to make his return to the WWE to finish off his career having amazing matches with the likes of Cesaro or Seth Rollins or Dean Ambrose. There is certainly a lot of scope for Kurt to return, the list of opponents is endless so hopefully we won’t have to much time to wait…
