Roll back to the beginning of May, WWE was a very different place. The brand split didn’t exist and in post WrestleMania season WWE released several key stars. The likes of Hornswoggle, El Torito, Santino, Alex Riley and Cameron were released from their contracts. In the mix of this big name star Wade Barrett and Damien Sandow asked for their releases. The following weeks, Adam Rose, Cody Rhodes and Ryback also left WWE.
Built in within WWE contract is a no compete clause, preventing WWE performers from appearing on TV within 3 months of leaving the company. Sandow, Rhodes and Hornswoggle were quick to make appearances throughout the world on non televised shows; including Global Force Wrestling and Evolve.
This Thursday, the first of the 2016 WWE releases will make his debut on TNA Impact Wrestling. Damien Sandow initially suggested that he would take a break from professional wrestling, so his upcoming debut on America’s second biggest wrestling promotion comes as a surprise. Speaking to to Rolling Stones, Aaron Stevens (his real name) spoke about why he decided to sign with Dixie Carter and TNA.
“TNA just seemed like the perfect spot for me. They are a growing company with a proven track record. I really believe that they have their finger on the pulse of what the audience wants, and they will gear their product towards that… I really was not planning on signing with anybody this soon, I was serious about that. But the way the conversations went with several TNA officials, and the strong feeling of a family atmosphere, really made me want to explore the possibility of getting in the ring sooner than I expected.”
Just like Drew Galloway, Bobby Lashley and others who have recently signed with TNA wrestling in their post WWE career. Damien Sandow has a chance to re-establish and invent himself. Many fans believed that he was held back during his time in WWE. Given more creative freedom and flexibility Sandow will no doubt shine in TNA.
