WWE Announces Second World Title – WWE Universal Championship

Finn Balor on RAW

In the words of John Cena, “the time is now”. Raw and Smackdown are officially split with stars exclusive to one show. Given the finale of WWE Battleground, Smackdown secured the WWE Championship, with Dean Ambrose retaining in the Shield triple threat match. The WWE title is a Smackdown exclusive.

A new look Monday Night Raw kicked off with the announcement smart fans would expect. Raw GM Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon proclaimed that Raw will be getting a World champion. Rather than the World Champion, Raw will have the WWE Universal Championship.

Stephanie McMahon declared that Seth Rollins is the number one contender for the title. However a challenger was needed. To crown a new champion, Raw saw 8 men compete in two fatal four way matches. Finn Balor overcame Rusev, Kevin Owens and Cesaro to advance. Whilst Roman Reigns defeated Chris Jericho, Sheamus and Sami Zayn. Finn Balor beat Roman Reigns in Raws main event. As a result, the Finn Balor will now face Seth Rollins at Summerslam. With the winner will become the inaugural WWE Universal Championship and the face of WWE Raw.

For WWE to disquish Raw and Smackdown two World titles makes sense. The Universal Title though? Its a pretty awful name, simply the WWE Universe championship is okay. Hopefully the name change will rub off and become normal seen enough. Finn Balor challenging the chosen Seth Rollins is an exciting smart move. A pure dream match which no one expected to happen so soon!

What are your thoughts on the new name for the World title? Does it sound good to you? Let us know!
