OSR: WWE IYH 13 – Final Four Review

In Your House 13 - Final Four

Old School Review: In Your House 13 – Final Four

Today we take a look back at February 1997’s In Your House event titled Final Four. An event that crowned a brand new WWE Champion following the shocking announcement three days prior that Shawn Michaels relinquished his championship due to injury. At the previous PPV, the Royal Rumble, Stone Cold Steve Austin literally stole the victory after he re-entered himself following elimination. As a result, Vader, Undertaker, Bret Hart and Austin were set to face off to determine a number one contender for Shawn Michaels title at Wrestlemania 13. However, Shawn’s sudden relinquishing of the title meant the match would be for the vacant WWE title.

Leaf Cassidy vs The Wildman “Marc Mero” (w/ Sable)

A nice opener to the Final Four PPV event between Marc Mero and the future Al Snow, at this point known as Leif Cassidy. Leif Cassidy played his role perfectly, making Marc Mero look a million bucks.

Winner: The Wildman

Match Rating: 2.5 out 5.0 Stars

6 Man Tag Match – The Nation of Domination (Faarooq, Crush, and Savio Vega) (with Clarence Mason) vs. Bart Gunn, Goldust, and Flash Funk

How the Nation mimicked the nWo at this point is unreal, how many members do they need? Domination and high pace was the focus of this match. How Flash Funk was believed to be over I still can’t understand why, his gimmick really doesn’t suit the Cruiserweight style of wrestling. None the less, the Nation dominate the match, with numbers playing to their advantage. Faarooq picks up the win by pinning Bart Gunn.

Winner: The Nation of Domination

Match Rating: 2.5 out of 5.0 Stars

WWE Intercontinental Championship: Hunter Hurst Helmsley vs Rocky Maivia (c)

It is crazy to look back and see the future; these two would go onto to be two of the iconic wrestlers of the Attitude Era. Triple H was about to begin his rise to the top whilst Rocky Maivia was very green. On the previous episode of RAW, Hunter lost his Intercontinental Championship to Rocky Maivia and tonight is his rematch. Goldust and Marlena come to the ring to distract Hunter; allowing Rocky to roll up and retain his championship. As Goldust stared down HHH, Marlena was choked out by a fan at ringside. The fan (who JR proclaimed “Is That A Woman?”) was rushed backstage by security. Nicely setting up the WrestleMania showdown between Goldust and Triple H.

Winner: Rocky Maivia

Match rating: 3.0 out of 5.0 Stars
