Random Wrestling Facts Christmas Countdown: December 10. 2015

We’re now on the countdown to Christmas 2015, and to take the sight off the doom and gloom in the buildup to this time of the year we shall be counting down the 16 Days till Christmas by bringing you a random wrestling fact on each day, with something related to the specific number of days left till Christmas. Yesterday, amongst other things we bought you WrestleMania X-Seven, and now here we go with Number 16…

Random Fact Number 16: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair

Ric Flair is  arguably one of the most gifted wrestlers off all time and a feat like that doesn’t come without it’s merits. It is often proclaimed Flair is a 16-time World Champion – 14-time NWA/WCW and 2-time WWE Champion…but if you look at the history books, Flair is actually a 15-time NWA/WCW World Champion and 2-time WWE Champion thud technically making him a 17-time World Champion. Even more bizarrely, it is disputed he may even be an up to 25-time Champion through a series of unrecognised title runs, I think now is a time for me to delve into the history books and work this out…

Other Number 16 Random Facts

  1. Starrcade 1998: at the 16th annual Starrcade event, the illustrious streak of Goldberg at 173-0 came to an end in his championship match with Kevin Nash, after being attacked by Scott Hall with a taser gun, Nash was able to pick up the win and end the streak. Another notable “match” featured Ric Flair versus Eric Bischoff…
  2. WrestleMania 2000: the 16th annual event was headlined by a Fatal 4 Way for the WWE Championship, more notably with a McMahon in every corner and the return of Mick Foley four weeks after retiring. The match culminated when Vince McMahon turned on The Rock, allowing Triple H to retain the title.
  3. August 16. 1929: on this day, a child called Jack Adkisson was born in Jewett, Texas. He would later become known to millions of fans as Fritz Von Erich, patriarch of the legendary Von Erich family. Following the deaths of a nunber of his children, he later died from cancer in 1997.
  4. April 16. 1968: on this day, a child called Vickie Lynn Lara was born in El Paso, Texas. She would later become known to millions of fans as Vickie Guerrero, the wife of the late Eddie Guerrero and later General Manager of RAW and SmackDown! She remained a regular character on WWE TV from 2006 until her retirement in 2014.
  5. December 16. 2015: on this day, NXT will finish its first British tour with NXT: Takeover being broadcast live at the Wembley Arena in London, England. As said, this will mark the first solo European tour of NXT, and myself and fellow editor Lucas cannot wait to be there…
  6. Royal Rumble 2003: the 16th annual Royal Rumble match was won by a 25-year old Brock Lesnar, winning his first Rumble match, but also featured the return of Shawn Michaels, his first Rumble match since 1996 but was quickly attacked and eliminated by Chris Jericho to setup their WrestleMania XIX contest.
  7. June 16. 1959: on this day, a child called James Hellwig was born in Crawfordsville, California. He would later become known to millions of fans as The Ultimate Warrior, former WWE Champion and 2014 Hall of Fame entrant. He returned for his induction 18 years after his last WWE appearance, to tragically pass away two days later.
  8. April 16. 2000: on this day, WCW aired Spring Stampede 2000 which was earmarked as a new start for WCW and as such new champions were crowned. Jeff Jarrett won his first WCW Championship, the first of four in 6-weeks…
  9. February 16. 2010: on this day, a mere three and a half years after its relaunch as a WWE brand, ECW (as such) finally closed its doors when its weekly episodic show was shown on SyFy. What you thought of ECW at the end is another matter, for me it was nothing like the ECW we all know, love and remember.
  10. SummerSlam 2003: at the 16th annual SummerSlam event, the main event was slated to be Goldberg versus Triple H for the world title. However, a torn groin on Triple H prevented this and was subsequently changed to an elimination chamber match
