WWE Editorial: Eddie Guerrero – Top 5 Moments

On November 13 2005, the wrestling world was hit by the tragic and devastating news that Eduardo Gory Guerrero Llanes, better known to millions as Eddie Guerrero had being found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the young and tender age of 38. There was a sudden out pouring of grief amongst the wrestling world, none of us could actually comprehend what was happening…surely this can’t be true, Eddie Guerrero is at the highest point of his career and surely can’t be gone…but sadly he was. The following episodes of RAW and SmackDown! were dedicated to his memory, with many wrestlers wearing arm bands or t-shirts embracing Eddie. But today isn’t a time to feel sad about him not being here, but remember the good times so here we bring you the Top 5 Eddie Guerrero moments…

#5: Versus Kurt Angle, WrestleMania 20

His classic battle with Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 20 remains a personal favourite of mine, it was his first true test as WWE Champion but set the sentiment he lived his in-ring career by, “Lie, Cheat, Steal” and was ultimately  able to gain the victory over Angle and retain the WWE Championship, thanks in part to help from his wrestling boot. An absolutely classic match, they complemented one another fantastically in the ring and styles bounced well off one another, but also they had the charisma to carry an entertaining feud but have a cracking wrestling match.

#4: Versus Rey Mysterio, WrestleMania 21

His classic battle with Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 21 began the start of his last long and enduring feud but arguably one of his most controversial. Rey and Eddie were genuinely best friends, and knew each other inside out and this shone across in the ring. They bounced off one another exceptionally well, and this sort of charisma is something which lacks today. My only dislike for this match, it really desperately needed another 10 minutes as it would have being so much better and much higher in the list but on a slightly more somber note, this was Eddie’s last WrestleMania. Still, it is remembered for the great wrestling show they displayed.

#3: The SmackDown! Six

As recently discussed by Lucas, the SmackDown! Six was a trio of men competing for the newly created WWE Tag Team Championship, a flagship title for the SmackDown! brand which resulted in classic match after classic match, the number of combinations which were presented from this trio were endless with a different story to be told each time. But more importantly, it started the classic duo run with his nephew Chavo Guerrero as the much-loved and missed Los Guerrero’s, who provided endless amount of entertainment for millions throughout 2002 and 2003. The incredible SmackDown! Six collided at Survivor Series 2002 in a triple threat tag team elimination match, in what was arguably the highlight of an exceptional event…and notably, Los Guerrero’s walked out WWE Tag Team Champions.

#2: Versus Rey Mysterio, Halloween Havoc 1997

This has to be arguably one of the best matches of Eddie’s career, and was at the height of the Latino World Order in WCW which provided the fans with a new style of action which was truly mesmerizing for millions. In a match billed Title vs Mask, they went back and forth for nearly 14 minutes captivating the audience, ultimately losing the Cruiserweight Championship to Mysterio. The loss is irrespective, the match was breathtaking and remains an absolute favourite of mine to this day, but once again this was another contest which really needed another 5-10 minutes.

#1: Versus Brock Lesnar, No Way Out 2004

In what was truly the defining moment of Eddie Guerrero’s, he entered No Way Out 2002 against The Beast Brock Lesnar as the ultimate underdog, no one expected him to walk out of the Cow Palace as WWE Champion, but he truly took the fight to Lesnar with everything he had before eventually hitting him with the Frog Splash to capture his first and only WWE Championship. The complete surprise but adulation and euphoria this moment bought to millions will live with me forever, and bought a new era to SmackDown!…this was Eddie Guerrero’s time, and he took it, ran with it and shone through with it!

To what was sadly the end of his career, Eddie truly shone above and beyond, he bought us many classic memories which will live with us for the remainder of each of our lifetimes. We will never forget you Eddie, we love you and miss you…long may you reign in the sky our friend, thank you for the memories.
