On the post Summerslam episode of Raw, Triple H won the WWE Championship from Mick Foley. As a result he was placed in a series of title defences on Raw and Smackdown. With The Game running the shots on TV, a previously banish Vince McMahon returned and challenged Triple H for the WWE Championship. A match he won on Smackdown, Mr McMahon relinquished the championship the following Raw, setting up a six pack challenge for the vacant WWE Title.

Triple H defeated The Rock, Mankind, Kane, The Big Show and The British Bulldog to capture the vacant WWE Championship in a Six Pack Challenge with Steve Austin as the Special Outside Enforcer
